Chapter 6 - THE SILENT PARTNER

The audio file was a revelation. It wasn't just a recording; it was the sound of the Ashford empire eating itself alive. Victoria and Richard weren't a united front; they were two scorpions in a jar, and Richard had clearly just stung his wife.

The injunction on my accounts was Richard’s doing, a desperate move to bleed me out before the federal authorities could finalize their subpoenas. But I had a weapon he didn't anticipate: his own wife's paranoia.

I picked up my phone and dialed the number Victoria had kept for thirty years, the one my father had shown me on the back of the old blueprint.

She answered on the second ring.

"Hello?" Her voice was tight, anxious.

"Victoria. It's Ethan."

Silence on the line. Then, a sharp, bitter laugh. "Are you calling to gloat? Because my lawyers assure me you'll be on the street by Friday."

"I'm not calling to gloat. I'm calling because I know Richard is setting you up to take the fall for the offshore accounts."

A sharp intake of breath. "You don't know what you're talking about."

"I heard the recording, Victoria. The one you made for your private investigator. Richard moved the shell company ownership into your maiden name three weeks ago. He's preparing to throw you to the wolves."

"That's a lie!" she snapped, but the panic in her voice betrayed her.

"Check the Cayman registry. You have clearance." I paused, letting the silence do the heavy lifting. "You humiliated my father to prove your loyalty to a man who is currently packing a private jet to leave you holding the bag."

I hung up. I didn't need to say anything else.

I drove back to the garage. My dad was still there, looking at the 1994 blueprint.

"Dad, I need a favor," I said. "I need you to come with me to the Ashford Annual Charity Gala tonight."

He looked up, horrified. "Ethan, no. I can't go back into that world. Not after the wedding."

"They stole your life's work. They made you feel like you were nothing. Tonight, you're going to walk into that ballroom, and you're going to take your dignity back."

I pulled out two thick, gold-embossed invitations. I had found them in Fiona's discarded wedding planner book.

"Put the suit back on, Dad."

At 8:00 PM, the doors of the Grand Belmont Hotel opened for the second time that week. The charity gala was the crown jewel of the Ashford social calendar.

My father and I walked into the ballroom. The whispers started immediately. People pointed. The 'gutter trash' and the jilted groom had returned.

Richard Ashford spotted us from the VIP terrace. His face contorted in absolute fury. He signaled two massive security guards and began marching down the grand staircase toward us.

"You have exactly ten seconds to leave this premises before I have you arrested for trespassing," Richard hissed, stopping inches from my face.

Before I could speak, a sharp voice rang out across the silent ballroom.

"They aren't trespassing, Richard. They're my guests."

Victoria Ashford stepped out from the crowd. She was wearing a stunning black evening gown, but her face was pale, and her eyes were burning with a hatred I had never seen before. She was holding a silver flash drive.

"Victoria," Richard warned, his voice low and dangerous. "What are you doing?"

May you like

She looked at her husband, then at my father.

"I'm giving Thomas back what we stole," she said clearly. She turned to the crowd, raising the flash drive. "And I'm giving the FBI everything they need."
