THE ASHES OF HARBOR STREET / Chapter 6 / 8

Chapter 7 - THE MASTER KEY

Julian didn't draw his gun. He was too close, and Samuel was too fast. Instead, Julian grabbed the heavy, silver champagne bucket from the center of the table and hurled it with terrifying force directly at Samuel’s head.

The bucket struck Samuel squarely in the jaw. Ice and freezing water exploded across the mahogany table.

The silver revolver discharged with a deafening crack, the bullet tearing through the crystal chandelier above us. Glass rained down like diamonds.

I tackled Vanessa to the floor just as Adrian vaulted across the table.

Adrian slammed into Samuel, driving the old lawyer backward into the grand fireplace. Samuel grunted in pain, dropping the revolver, but he was incredibly strong for a man his age. He threw a vicious punch, catching Adrian under the eye, and scrambled for the dropped weapon.

Gideon didn't hesitate. My son lunged forward, kicking the revolver across the marble floor. He grabbed Samuel by the lapels of his tailored suit and slammed him against the stone mantle.

“Where is my daughter?!” Gideon roared, pressing his forearm against Samuel’s throat.

Samuel choked, a bloody smile spreading across his teeth. “It’s too late. The timer hit zero. She’s already burning.”

Gideon let out a sound of pure agony. He raised his fist, ready to beat the life out of the man who had orchestrated the destruction of our families.

“Gideon, wait!” Julian shouted over the chaos.

Julian scrambled to the table, grabbing Vanessa’s phone. He stared at the screen, his fingers flying across the keypad.

“The feed is still live,” Julian breathed, his voice trembling with disbelief. “She’s still there.”

Gideon froze, his fist suspended in the air. He turned his head. “What?”

Julian held up the phone. The video showed Lily, still tied to the chair, still crying, but the warehouse around her was entirely unlit. There was no fire.

“How is that possible?” Vanessa gasped, pushing herself up from the floor, clutching my arm for support. “The dead-man’s switch... if the men at the harbor didn't get the signal, they were ordered to ignite the fuel.”

Samuel stared at the phone, genuine confusion finally breaking his arrogant composure. “My men never disobey orders.”

“They aren't your men anymore, Samuel,” a new voice echoed from the doorway.

Everyone turned.

Standing in the shattered double doors of the dining room was a man wearing an FBI windbreaker, flanked by a dozen heavily armed tactical agents.

But it wasn't the FBI agent who had spoken.

It was the man standing next to him.

He was in his late thirties, wearing a tactical vest, his face rugged and scarred, but his eyes were heartbreakingly familiar.

Vanessa let out a strangled cry. She covered her mouth with both hands, her entire body shaking.

“Leo?” Vanessa whispered.

The man in the tactical vest stepped into the light. He looked at Vanessa, a deep, profound sorrow in his eyes.

“Hello, little sister,” Leo Laurent said softly.

The room was completely paralyzed.

“Your brother didn't disappear eighteen years ago, Vanessa,” I said, slowly standing up from the floor. My knees ached, but my heart soared. “When Samuel sent the men to kill him for failing to deliver the watch, I didn't just pay him to run. I hid him.”

Leo walked forward, ignoring Samuel and the armed agents. He stopped in front of Vanessa. “Helena put me in the trunk of her car. She drove me across state lines. She paid for my college, Vanessa. She saved my life.”

Vanessa threw her arms around her brother, burying her face in his tactical vest, sobbing with the grief of eighteen lost years. Leo held her tight, resting his chin on her head.

“When I grew up, I joined the Bureau,” Leo explained, looking at Adrian and Gideon. “I’ve been tracking Samuel’s financial crimes for a decade, waiting for him to make a mistake. Tonight, he made one.”

Leo looked at Samuel, who was still pinned against the fireplace by Gideon.

“You hired mercenaries to guard the warehouse where you kept the girl,” Leo said coldly. “But mercenaries follow the money. And the FBI has a very large budget for informants. We raided the harbor ten minutes ago. Your men surrendered without a shot. Lily is safe. She’s in a squad car on her way here right now.”

Gideon let out a shuddering, broken breath. The sheer relief washed over him so powerfully his knees buckled. He let go of Samuel and collapsed against the mantle, burying his face in his hands.

“It’s over, Samuel,” Leo said, nodding to the tactical agents.

The FBI swarmed the room. Two agents grabbed Samuel, violently twisting his arms behind his back and securing him in heavy steel handcuffs. The old lawyer didn't fight them. He just stared at me, his eyes filled with a venomous, defeated hatred.

“You ruined everything, Helena,” Samuel spat as they dragged him toward the door.

I stood tall, smoothing the wrinkles of my black dress.

“No, Samuel,” I said quietly. “I finally fixed it.”
