THE ALDER ROOM SECRETS / Chapter 7 / 8

Chapter 8 - THE CONFESSION

The pink hospital tag lay on the floor, bright and damning under the chandelier light.

"You kept the access tag," I said, the pieces of the puzzle violently locking into place. "You paid someone at the hospital to get into lockup. You stole my dead wife's identity right out of her purse."

Robert was cornered. The journalists were practically climbing over the table to get a shot of the keys on the floor.

"You can't prove anything!" Robert yelled, backing toward the service exit. "It's circumstantial! My lawyers will bury you, Mercer!"

"They won't have to," a new voice rang out.

The heavy oak doors opened wider, and Patricia Collins stepped into the room.

Her face was pale, but her chin was held high. In her hands, she carried the heavy red reservation ledger and a small, black USB drive.

"Patricia, don't you dare," Robert warned, his voice a venomous hiss.

Patricia didn't look at him. She looked at the police officers.

"For the last three years," Patricia said, her voice shaking but clear, "Mr. Ellis instructed me to turn away specific demographics of customers. But he also forced me to alter the daily cash receipts. The missing money was funneled into an offshore account to pay for the lawyers setting up Elena Holdings."

She held up the black USB drive.

"I kept copies. Every altered receipt. Every email he sent threatening my job if I didn't comply."

She walked forward and handed the drive directly to the older police officer.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Mercer," Patricia said, finally looking at me. Tears filled her eyes. "I was terrified of him. I wanted to keep my job. I judged you tonight because he trained us to judge everyone. But I won't let him steal your family's legacy."

Robert lunged at her. "You stupid, ungrateful—"

The older police officer intercepted him smoothly, grabbing Robert’s arm and twisting it sharply behind his back.

"Robert Ellis," the officer barked over the frantic flashing of cameras. "You are under arrest for fraud, identity theft, and grand larceny."

"Get your hands off me!" Robert screamed, struggling against the cuffs. "I built this brand! You're nothing without me, Daniel! Nothing! You’re just a guy in muddy boots!"

I stood quietly as the officers marched him out of the room.

"The boots built the foundation, Robert," I said softly as he passed.

The room erupted into chaos. Journalists began shouting questions at me. The health inspector was furiously writing notes, apologizing profusely for his involvement.

But I tuned it all out.

I looked down.

Sophie was standing beside me. She wasn't crying anymore. She was looking up at me with wide, awe-struck eyes.

"Daddy," she whispered. "You saved Mommy's necklace."

I knelt down and placed the silver locket gently into her small hands.

"I did, sweetheart," I smiled. "And now, it belongs to you."

May you like

She clutched it to her chest.

The nightmare was over. But we still had one more thing to do.
