Chapter 6 - THE FATHER'S WATCH

Preston’s eyes were wild, darting between Marcus, the stolen antiques, and me.

"Step away from the boy, Rebecca," Preston ordered, his voice cracking with desperation.

Marcus slowly raised his hands, stepping back into the shadows of the storage unit. "You lied to me, Preston. You said we had twenty million in cash. You're holding a unit full of stolen art."

"It's leverage!" Preston shouted over the pouring rain. "These people trusted me with their estates. I have dirt on half the city council in these boxes. I can sell it all from overseas!"

I clutched my father’s broken gold watch in my palm. The metal dug sharply into my skin, grounding me.

"You stole from my father," I said, my voice dangerously calm. "You stole from my mother. You stole from your investors. And now you’re trying to steal a sick child from a hospital."

Preston sneered, leveling the gun at my head. "Leo is my son. He's the only real family I have. You were just a bank account, Rebecca. A naive, desperate woman who wanted a husband so badly she didn't realize I was gutting her inheritance for two decades."

Leo buried his face into my coat, crying softly. "Dad, please stop. I don't want to go on the airplane."

"We are going, Leo!" Preston yelled. "I did all of this for you! So you would never have to be poor like I was!"

"You didn't do it for him," a new voice echoed through the rain.

Vanessa stepped into the dim light of the storage unit. She was soaking wet, holding her cell phone up. The screen was illuminated, recording every word.

Preston froze. "Vanessa? How did you find me?"

"You left the clinic's address in your glovebox," she said coldly. "And Rebecca left the hospital's address on my kitchen counter before she left. I called the police ten minutes ago, Preston. They’re already at the gates."

Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder by the second.

Preston panicked. He swung the gun toward Vanessa, his hand shaking violently. "You stupid little girl! I gave you everything!"

"You gave me a cage," Vanessa fired back, not flinching. "And I just handed the keys to the FBI."

In the split second Preston turned his attention to Vanessa, Marcus moved. The massive security guard tackled Preston to the concrete floor. The silver pistol discharged, the gunshot deafening inside the metal unit, but the bullet sparked harmlessly against the ceiling.

Marcus wrenched the gun from Preston's grip and pinned his arms behind his back.

"I'm not going to prison for you, boss," Marcus grunted, pressing his knee into Preston's spine.

I knelt down and pulled Leo tightly against my chest, shielding his eyes as the flashing red and blue lights of police cruisers flooded the storage facility.

Two officers rushed in, pulling Preston to his feet and slamming him against the metal door to cuff him.

Preston looked at me, his arrogant facade completely shattered. He looked pathetic.

"Rebecca, please," he begged, his voice breaking. "I'm your husband. We've been married for twenty-two years. Don't let them take me."

I walked up to him. I reached into my pocket, pulled out the empty velvet jewelry box he had laughed at hours earlier, and dropped it at his feet in the mud.

"Twenty-two years," I said softly. "And the only thing you ever learned was how to spend my money. Now you have nothing."

As they dragged Preston away to the cruiser, a frantic woman in a trench coat pushed through the police line.

It was Victoria Hayes.

She looked at the storage unit full of stolen art, then at me holding Leo.

"Rebecca," Victoria breathed, completely stunned. "The bank just audited the offshore accounts. The money... it's not missing. It's completely gone."
