Chapter 8 - The Ledger Falls

From behind the perimeter fence, the wail of approaching sirens suddenly split the night air—three, then four local and federal cruisers converging on Gate Four with blue and red lights painting the chain-link fence in flashing ribbons of color.

Arthur’s expression flickered for the first time. The absolute certainty in his eyes wavered as he realized the airfield police had locked down the secondary taxiways behind the hangar.

"You think a few local cops can hold an international holding corporation?" Arthur shouted, stepping back toward the cabin door.

"They aren't local cops, Arthur," a calm voice echoed from behind the arriving cruisers.

Federal Regional Director Vance stepped out from the lead vehicle, holding a thick sheaf of federal warrants stamped by a federal judge less than twenty minutes ago. "That's a freeze order on every personal and corporate asset registered to Arthur Vale, effective immediately. The pilots aren't taking off, and neither are you."

Arthur stared at the federal director, then down at Ethan and Maya standing at the base of the staircase. For a fraction of a second, the mask of corporate invulnerability cracked completely, revealing the desperate, cornered man beneath.

He reached into his coat pocket as if to grab his passport, but Daniel was already up the first two aluminum steps, his service weapon drawn and steady.

"Don't do it, Arthur. Put your hands on the railing where we can see them. Now."

Arthur looked at the cold steel barrel of the weapon, then slowly let his leather briefcase drop to the carpeted step. He raised his hands, his fingers trembling slightly as the bitter wind caught his overcoat.

"You haven't won anything," Arthur whispered as the federal agents swarmed up the stairs behind Daniel, clicking the steel cuffs around his wrists with a sharp, metallic snap. "The system was broken long before I touched it."

"Maybe," Daniel said, turning him around toward the landing. "But you're going to spend the rest of your natural life trying to explain it to a federal jury."

As federal agents led Arthur down the stairs in handcuffs and past the flashing lights of the cruiser barricade, Ethan exhaled a breath he felt like he had been holding since he was twelve years old.

Maya stood beside him, watching the man descend. The weight that had crushed her family for half a lifetime seemed to lift from her shoulders, carried away on the cold wind of the New Jersey tarmac.
