Chapter 7 - THE HEIR

I stared at the heavy gold coin in my palm, the rain washing the dirt from my name engraved on its surface.

Rachel Bennett.

Why would the mafia boss, a man I only knew as my employer, have my name inscribed on a multi-million dollar family heirloom?

I looked up. Luca was still holding Leo tightly to his chest, whispering to the boy that he was safe.

Marco had Carlo zip-tied on the gravel. Vanessa was sobbing quietly beside the car.

“Teresa,” I said, my voice trembling as I knelt beside the injured woman. I held the gold coin up. “Why is my name on this?”

Teresa winced, pressing a bloody hand to her shoulder. She looked at the coin, a weak, sad smile crossing her lips.

“Because my husband didn’t just respect your mother, Rachel,” Teresa whispered. “He owed her his empire.”

Luca slowly pulled back from Leo. He kept one arm wrapped protectively around his son and looked at his mother.

“What do you mean he owed her?” Luca asked.

Teresa took a ragged breath. “Fifteen years ago, when your father’s trucking business was about to go bankrupt, it was Elizabeth who found the discrepancy in the taxes. She saved the company. When Carlo killed Arthur, my husband blamed himself. He knew Arthur died because he was working for us.”

Teresa reached out and squeezed my hand. Her skin was freezing.

“My husband knew the Moretti family owed you a debt blood couldn’t repay,” Teresa continued. “So, when he realized he was dying, and that Carlo and Vincent were circling the family money like vultures, he didn’t just hide his wealth.”

She pointed to the gold coin in my hand.

“He legally adopted you, Rachel.”

The words hit me like a physical blow. I stopped breathing.

“What?” Luca asked, stunning disbelief in his eyes.

“It’s true,” Teresa said. “Three weeks before he died, my husband signed the papers. He placed half of the hidden estate into a trust for Leo, to ensure his grandson would be safe. And he placed the other half in a trust for Rachel. You aren’t a housekeeper, Rachel. You are a Moretti heir. An equal partner in everything.”

I sat back on my heels in the mud.

For five years, I had scrubbed their floors. I had served their dinners. I had endured Vanessa’s cruelty. All while I was legally the co-owner of the very estate I was cleaning.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” I asked, tears spilling down my cheeks. “Why let me live like a servant?”

“Because if Carlo or Vincent knew you were an heir, you would have been the first one they killed,” Teresa said gently. “We had to wait until you were ready. Until Luca was ready to see the truth about his uncle.”

Luca looked at me. The rigid, cold mafia boss exterior had completely shattered. In his eyes, I saw deep, profound respect.

“My father made you my equal,” Luca said quietly. “And he was right to do it.”

Suddenly, a slow, mocking clap echoed through the rain.

We all turned.

Stepping out from behind a rusted shipping container was a tall, impeccably dressed man holding an umbrella.

Vincent Bellini.

Vanessa’s father.

He wasn’t alone. Four heavily armed men fanned out behind him, their rifles raised and pointed directly at us.

Marco immediately reached for his gun, but two red laser sights settled instantly on Marco’s chest.

“Ah, ah, ah,” Vincent clicked his tongue, smiling coldly. “Drop it, Marco. Or you die before you hit the ground.”

Marco slowly raised his hands, stepping away from Carlo.

Vincent walked forward, ignoring his sobbing daughter in the mud. He stopped a few feet from Luca.

“A very touching family reunion,” Vincent sneered. “But I’m afraid the adoption paperwork won’t matter when you’re all buried under this rail yard.”

Luca didn’t flinch. He stood up, shielding Leo behind his legs.

“You’re out of your mind, Vincent,” Luca said. “If you kill me, the Five Families will hunt you to the ends of the earth.”

Vincent chuckled. “They won’t hunt me, Luca. They’ll hunt Carlo. My men will stage the scene beautifully. A tragic family shootout. The treacherous uncle kills the beloved boss, his mother, and the poor little maid. My men take out Carlo in self-defense. I walk away with the blue ledger, the cartel debt is wiped, and I take over the ports.”

Carlo, still zip-tied on the ground, looked up in horror. “Vincent! We had a deal!”

“The deal expired when you brought a child into this, you idiot,” Vincent snapped. He looked at his men. “Kill them all. Start with the boy.”

One of the armed men raised his rifle, aiming directly at Leo.

I didn’t think. I just reacted.

I threw myself in front of Luca and Leo.

But the gunshot never came.

Instead, a bright red laser beam suddenly appeared on Vincent Bellini’s forehead.

Vincent froze.

Then, another laser appeared on his chest. Then another on his throat.

Out of the darkness, from the rooftops of the rusted train cars, a dozen men dressed in black tactical gear emerged. They were holding high-powered sniper rifles, all trained perfectly on Vincent and his crew.

Vincent dropped his umbrella, his smug smile vanishing instantly.

A voice echoed from the shadows.

“You really think you could track my son without me knowing, Vincent?”

Luca smiled, a dark, terrifying smirk.

“You aren’t the only one who plans ahead,” Luca said.

Vincent’s men instantly dropped their weapons, raising their hands in surrender.

Luca walked up to Vincent.

“You thought I brought Marco out here alone?” Luca whispered. “I own this city, Vincent. And you just threatened my family.”

Luca punched Vincent in the face so hard the older man collapsed into the mud, unconscious before he stopped rolling.
