Chapter 4 - THE DIVERTED FUNDS

The dining room descended into absolute chaos.
Richard Caldwell slammed his fist on the table, rattling the fine crystal. "You've been embezzling our donations to protect a street thug?"
"It's not true!" Vanessa screamed, her perfect composure entirely shattered. She pointed a trembling finger at Leo. "This boy is a liar! He's probably working with the janitor to extort us!"
"Don't you dare accuse my mother again," Grace said, stepping forward. Her fear was gone, replaced by a fierce, burning anger. "You tried to destroy my future just to cover your own tracks."
Adrian raised a single hand.
The entire room fell instantly, terrifyingly silent. The power he wielded was undeniable.
He walked over to Emily. "Emily. Pull up the foundation's ledger for the emergency relief fund for the last three years. Now."
Emily's hands shook as she typed. The guests watched in breathless suspense.
"Sir," Emily whispered a moment later, staring at the screen. "There are dozens of withdrawals. All marked as anonymous grants for medical emergencies. But they all route to the same offshore holding company."
"And the total amount missing?" Adrian asked.
Emily swallowed hard. "Just over four hundred thousand dollars."
Vanessa stumbled backward, pressing her hands against her face. "Adrian, please. Julian was in trouble. He owed money to people who were going to kill him. I had to protect him."
"By stealing from students who actually needed it?" Adrian’s voice was dangerously soft. "By humiliating Mrs. Dawson in front of my guests?"
"She was going to find out!" Vanessa cried, pointing at me. "When I saw the name Grace Dawson on the final winner's list, I panicked. I knew her mother was the woman Julian pushed. If she started asking questions, if she met Julian at the wedding... the truth would come out. I had to revoke the scholarship so she would just go away!"
I stared at her, feeling sick to my stomach. "You tried to ruin my daughter's life because your brother is a coward?"
"I was protecting my family!" Vanessa screamed back.
"You don't know the first thing about protecting family," I said quietly, my voice carrying across the silent room. "I scrubbed toilets for eleven years to give my daughter a chance. You sat in a mansion and stole it."
Adrian looked at his fiancée with utter disgust. He reached into his pocket, pulled out his phone, and dialed a number.
"Bring a car to the front," Adrian said into the phone. "Miss Laurent is leaving. Permanently."
Vanessa sobbed, trying to reach for him, but Adrian stepped away. Two of his security guards entered the room instantly, gently but firmly taking Vanessa by the arms and guiding her out of the dining room.
The heavy oak doors clicked shut behind her, finalizing her exile.
Adrian turned back to the table. The tension in the room remained thick.
"Mr. Caldwell," Adrian said to the wealthy donor. "The Moretti family will personally reimburse every stolen dollar by tomorrow morning. I apologize for the disgrace that occurred under my roof."
Caldwell nodded stiffly, though his anger seemed somewhat appeased. "See that you do, Adrian."
Adrian turned to Grace. His hard expression softened significantly.
"Grace," he said gently. "Your scholarship is secure. You will have your forty-eight thousand dollars tomorrow. And I will personally ensure your enrollment deposit is paid by Friday."
Grace’s eyes filled with tears, but this time, they were tears of relief. She looked at me, a brilliant, beautiful smile breaking across her face.
I hugged her tightly, burying my face in her shoulder. The nightmare was over. The truth was out.
"Thank you, Mr. Moretti," I said, looking at him with deep gratitude.
"Don't thank me yet, Mrs. Dawson," Adrian said, his voice lowering. He looked toward Leo, who was still standing awkwardly near the doorway.
"Leo," Adrian said. "You took a massive risk coming here tonight. You exposed a dangerous man. Why?"
Leo looked down at his scuffed sneakers. "Because Mrs. Dawson took a hit for me. She saved my life. I owed her."
"But there's a missing piece," Adrian said, crossing his arms. He walked toward Martin Bellamy, who had remained suspiciously quiet during Vanessa's downfall.
"Martin," Adrian said. "Vanessa changed the eligibility rule fifteen days ago. But earlier tonight, you said you approved the change because someone submitted a fraudulent payment request to divert the money to a private account."
Martin nodded nervously, wiping sweat from his forehead. "Yes. That's true."
Adrian held up the bank deposit slip Leo had brought. "Vanessa didn't need to divert the scholarship money. She already had access to the emergency fund. Diverting a high-profile scholarship would be incredibly stupid and risky."
Emily looked up from her laptop, her brow furrowed. "He's right. The payment request didn't route to Vanessa's offshore account. It routed to a domestic trust fund."
"Whose trust fund?" Adrian demanded.
Emily typed frantically. A moment later, she stopped, the color draining from her face for the second time that night.
She looked up, not at Martin, but at Richard Caldwell.
"It routed to a trust fund registered to Richard Caldwell's son," Emily whispered.
Everyone turned to stare at the wealthy donor who, only moments ago, had acted so righteously outraged.
Caldwell’s face turned deep red. He looked at Martin Bellamy, panic flashing in his eyes.
"Martin," Caldwell hissed. "You promised me this wouldn't come out."
Adrian stepped toward the men.
"What is going on here?" Adrian demanded. "Why is a billionaire trying to steal forty-eight thousand dollars from a high school student?"
Martin Bellamy slowly reached into his suit jacket. His hands were shaking so badly he could barely manage it.
He pulled out a small, worn leather journal.
"He didn't steal it, Adrian," Martin said softly, his voice full of sorrow. "He was trying to buy the evidence back."
He slid the journal across the table toward Adrian.

"Evidence of what?" Adrian asked.
Martin closed his eyes. "Evidence that Grace Dawson’s father didn't die in a car accident eighteen years ago. He was murdered."
