Chapter 9 - The Bluebird in the Quilt

Six months later, the snow was falling heavily outside the floor-to-ceiling windows of the DeSantis mansion.

The house was warm, smelling of cinnamon and roasting turkey. It was Thanksgiving.

I sat on the thick rug in the living room, helping Ruby piece together a massive, thousand-piece puzzle. My right arm was completely healed, out of the sling, and stronger than ever.

Nico sat on the leather sofa behind us, a glass of red wine in his hand, watching us with a look of absolute, profound peace.

Things had changed drastically over the last half-year.

Nico had stepped back from the darker, more dangerous aspects of his family's business. He had transitioned his wealth into legitimate real estate and logistics companies, wanting a safer, cleaner world for Ruby to grow up in.

And things had changed between us, too.

The invisible line between boss and employee had blurred, and then vanished entirely. We had started having dinner together after Ruby went to sleep. Then, those dinners turned into late-night conversations by the fire. And a month ago, under the soft glow of the porch lights during the first snow of the year, he had kissed me.

It wasn't a rushed, desperate thing. It was slow, deliberate, and a promise of everything that was to come.

"Hannah, look!" Ruby pointed to the puzzle. "I found the corner piece!"

"Good job, detective," I laughed, handing her the connecting piece.

Nico set his wine glass down and slid off the sofa, joining us on the floor. He sat close to me, his shoulder pressing warmly against mine.

"I have a surprise," Nico said, looking at Ruby.

Ruby gasped, abandoning the puzzle. "Is it a puppy?!"

Nico chuckled, a deep, rich sound. "No, not a puppy. Not yet. But I did get something back today."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box.

My heart did a sudden, wild flip.

But Nico didn't open it toward me. He opened it toward Ruby.

Inside the box rested a delicate, silver necklace. Hanging from the chain was a tiny, beautifully crafted bluebird with sapphire eyes.

"Do you remember the story your mom used to tell you when she made your quilt?" Nico asked softly.

Ruby nodded, her eyes wide. "She said she sewed a little bluebird into the fabric so I would always have happiness watching over me."

"That's right," Nico said. "When your mom got sick, she asked me to hold onto this necklace. She wanted me to give it to you when you were brave enough to face the world without her."

He pulled the necklace from the box.

"You were so brave this year, Ruby," Nico whispered, tears shining in his eyes. "You protected your mother's memory. You protected Hannah. I am so incredibly proud of you."

Ruby was crying now, happy tears slipping down her cheeks. She turned around so Nico could clasp the silver chain around her neck.

The little sapphire bluebird rested perfectly against her collarbone.

She turned back and threw her arms around Nico. "I love it, Daddy. Thank you."

Then, to my complete surprise, Ruby reached out and grabbed my hand, pulling me into the hug.

The three of us sat on the floor, tangled together in a pile of arms and laughter.

Nico looked at me over Ruby's shoulder. His eyes were dark, filled with a love so fierce and protective it took my breath away.

He mouthed two words to me.Thank you.

I smiled, squeezing his hand.

We had survived the betrayal. We had exposed the monsters hiding in the dark.

And in the ashes of the life Brielle had tried to destroy, we had built something beautiful, indestructible, and entirely ours.

I wasn't just the girl who poured the coffee anymore.

I was the woman who held the family together.
