Chapter 6 - THE FORGED SIGNATURE

The revelation struck the room like a physical shockwave.
Richard stopped crying. He stared at Amber, his jaw hanging slack, his mind struggling to process the monumental betrayal. The young, beautiful woman he thought he was seducing with stolen wealth was actually a spy, planted in his bed by the very man who was orchestrating his ruin.
"You..." Richard choked out, pointing a trembling finger at Amber. "You work for William? You’ve been sleeping with me for William?"
Amber snapped the gold compact shut. The terrified mistress act vanished, replaced by the hardened, calculating demeanor of a corporate operative who had just realized her cover was blown and her boss had left her in the blast zone.
"Don't flatter yourself, Richard," Amber sneered, tossing her blonde hair over her shoulder. "William didn't care who you slept with. He just needed someone to monitor your laptop and make sure you were stupid enough to sign the bridge loan documents without reading the fine print. You made it incredibly easy. A few compliments, some expensive dinners, and you handed over your passwords like a lovesick teenager."
Richard looked like he was going to vomit. He collapsed back into his chair, clutching his stomach. The ultimate narcissist had just discovered he was nothing but a pawn.
Eleanor ignored her husband's collapse. Her mind was racing, processing the data Amber had just provided.
"William Stratford owns the shell company," Eleanor said, looking at David Chen, who was furiously typing on his laptop. "David, trace the ownership of the LLC on the eviction notice."
"Already on it, Eleanor," David replied, dropping the 'Ms. Vance' formality in the heat of the moment. "Amber is right. The shell company traces back to a blind trust managed by William Stratford's personal wealth manager in the Bahamas."
Eleanor placed her hands flat on the mahogany table. The scope of the conspiracy was staggering, yet mathematically elegant.
"William wasn't trying to save Stratford Industries," Eleanor deduced, speaking her thoughts aloud. "He knew the company was failing. He forced Richard to cover the corporate margins using his own personal wealth, and when Richard ran out of money, William acted as the shadow lender, issuing a predatory bridge loan secured by my house."
"Exactly," Amber said, standing up and smoothing her emerald dress. "William planned to let Vanguard Capital buy the toxic corporate debt tonight. Once Vanguard absorbed Stratford Industries, William was going to declare personal bankruptcy, keeping the millions he laundered through your husband, and leaving Richard to take the fall for the forged documents and the missing trust fund."
Amber picked up the gold compact and held it out toward Eleanor.
"But William made a mistake," Amber said, her voice cold and transactional. "He promised me a two-million-dollar bonus for keeping Richard distracted. But when I checked my offshore account this morning, the transfer hadn't cleared. William is cutting ties. He’s throwing me under the bus too."
Amber popped the back of the gold compact open. Hidden beneath the mirror was a tiny, black micro-SD card.
"This drive," Amber said, looking directly at Eleanor, "contains William Stratford’s real ledgers. The un-redacted files. The proof that he forced Richard to forge your signature, and the proof that William personally authorized the embezzlement of your son's trust fund to cover his own toxic trades."
Eleanor stared at the tiny black square of plastic. It was the smoking gun. It was the key to clearing Richard of the most serious federal charges and destroying the CEO who had tried to steal her home.
"I'll give it to you," Amber bargained, her eyes narrowing. "But I want two million dollars wired to my account in Geneva tonight, and I want Vanguard's legal team to guarantee me full immunity from the SEC investigation."
Richard looked up, a spark of desperate hope igniting in his eyes. "Ellie! Pay her! It proves William forced me! It proves I'm innocent!"
Eleanor looked down at her husband with absolute disgust. "You aren't innocent, Richard. You still forged my name. You still stole your son's money. Whether William held the gun or not, you pulled the trigger."
Eleanor turned her gaze back to Amber. She looked at the young woman, holding her extortion demand in the palm of her hand, believing she held all the cards.
Eleanor smiled. The thin, cold expression she had worn in the hallway returned.
"Keep your flash drive, Ms. Rawlings," Eleanor said softly.
Amber’s confident facade cracked. "What? If you don't take this, William gets away with it! Your husband goes to prison, and the bank takes your house tomorrow morning at nine AM!"
"No, they won't," Eleanor said.
She turned to David Chen. "David. Three weeks ago, when Vanguard began aggressively buying up distressed commercial debt bundles to position ourselves for this acquisition... didn't we purchase a portfolio of high-risk bridge loans from a Bahamian trust?"
David’s fingers stopped typing. A slow, predatory smile spread across his face as he pulled up a new spreadsheet.
"Yes, we did," David confirmed, turning the laptop screen so Amber and Richard could see it. "We purchased the entire debt portfolio of William Stratford's shadow LLC for pennies on the dollar."
Eleanor leaned forward, bracing her hands on the table, staring directly into her husband's horrified eyes.
"I don't need Amber's flash drive to prove William is corrupt, Richard," Eleanor whispered. "And William's shell company isn't the one foreclosing on the Greenwich estate tomorrow morning."
May you like
Eleanor picked up the eviction notice and tore it neatly in half.
"Vanguard Capital owns your debt," Eleanor said, dropping the torn paper onto the table. "I foreclosed on my own house, Richard. Because it was the only way to legally sever your forged claim to my property before I divorce you."
