Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN BEHIND THE IRON GATE

The cold rain hit my face like needles as I raced across the gravel drive, my boots crunching loudly in the dark.

As I drew closer to the gate, the beam of a small tactical flashlight cut through the fog.

Luca was holding the flashlight in one hand while supporting a frail, silver-haired woman in the other. She was wrapped in a thick wool blanket, her face pale, her eyes wide and disoriented as she stared up at the night sky.

"Emma, get back in the car!" Luca barked over the sound of the wind, his breathing heavy as he hauled the woman forward.

"I couldn't just sit there," I yelled back, reaching out to grab the woman's other arm to help steady her.

Up close, the resemblance was undeniable.

Though her cheeks were hollowed by years of illness and isolation, she had the exact same deep, expressive dark eyes as Luca and little Leo.

"Luciano?" the elderly woman whispered, her voice cracking like dry autumn leaves. She reached up with a frail, paper-thin hand and touched Luca’s cheek. "Is it really you? Or am I dreaming again?"

"It's me, Mama," Luca choked out, his voice breaking in a way that made my chest ache. The ruthless mafia boss, feared across the entire Midwest, looked like a broken little boy holding onto his mother for dear life. "I'm right here. I've got you."

"Your father... he told me you forgot me," she sobbed, burying her face against his broad chest. "He said you hated me for leaving."

"It was a lie, Mama. All of it was a lie," Luca promised, kissing the top of her silver head. "We're going home. Both of you. Leo is waiting in the car."

At the mention of her younger son's name, the woman gasped, her eyes flying wide open. "Leo? You found him? Vanessa said she would—"

Before she could finish her sentence, a blinding floodlight slammed down from the top of the security tower, turning the dark courtyard as bright as midday.

ALARM! BREACH IN SECTOR FOUR! an automated metallic voice shrieked across the facility's loudspeakers.

Heavy steel doors slammed shut along the perimeter wall, cutting off our path back to the SUV.

Heavy combat boots thudded against the gravel behind us.

"Well, well, well," a cold, familiar voice echoed from the shadows of the guard tower.

A man in a sharp black trench coat stepped out into the rain, holding a silenced pistol pointed directly at Luca’s chest. Behind him stood three armed mercenaries, their assault rifles raised and ready.

It wasn't Vanessa.

It was Marcus Vance—Vanessa’s uncle and the head of the Chicago Syndicate's eastern faction.

"I always knew you were reckless, Luca," Marcus sneered, a cruel smile twisting his lips. "Abandoning your own engagement dinner over an old kitchen maid and a brat. But walking right into my front yard? That’s just sloppy."

Luca didn't flinch.

With agonizing slowness, he lowered his mother gently into my arms, stepping in front of us like a living shield.

"Put the gun down, Marcus," Luca said, his voice dropping an octave into pure ice. "You've got nowhere to run. The federal audit on your offshore accounts started twenty minutes ago."

Marcus laughed, a harsh, grating sound that cut through the wind.

"You think the feds can touch me here, boy? This facility doesn't exist on any map. And once I put a bullet in your head and make it look like a botched rescue attempt, Vanessa inherits the entire Moretti estate by morning."

Marcus raised his pistol higher, lining up the sights directly between Luca’s eyes.

My heart stopped.

I looked down at Luca’s mother trembling in my arms, and then back at Luca, standing tall and unprotected in the crossfire.

Without thinking, I let go of Mrs. Moretti, lunged forward, and shoved Luca hard to the side just as Marcus pulled the trigger.

CRACK.

May you like

A bullet screamed past my ear, tearing through the sleeve of my denim jacket and grazing my shoulder with a searing, white-hot pain.

I screamed as I hit the gravel, the breath knocked entirely out of my lungs.
