Chapter 2 - THE MAID WHO KNEW TOO MUCHFor several seconds after Maya spoke, Adrian forgot about the three hundred people surrounding them.

“There’s even more.”

Her words were almost swallowed by the voices exploding across the ballroom.

Guests turned toward one another in disbelief. Phones appeared. Photographers pushed closer. Somewhere near the stage, Adrian’s security chief began instructing guards to close the ballroom doors.

Vanessa stared at Adrian’s hand.

Her engagement ring rested in his palm.

“Give that back.”

Adrian looked at her.

“No.”

“You can’t take my ring.”

“It was never yours.”

Vanessa’s expression twisted.

“We’re engaged.”

“Not anymore.”

The words spread through the ballroom before Adrian finished saying them.

A woman near the bar whispered, “Oh my God.”

Another guest raised her phone.

Vanessa heard them.

Her eyes darted from Adrian to the cameras, then to Maya.

Hatred sharpened her face.

“This is because of her.”

Adrian stepped between them.

“No. This is because of you.”

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“You believe a waitress over the woman you planned to marry?”

“Maid,” Maya said quietly.

Vanessa turned.

“What?”

“You keep calling me a waitress when you’re insulting me. I’m a housekeeper.”

It was such a small correction that several guests almost smiled.

Vanessa didn’t.

“You think this is funny?”

“No, ma’am.”

“Stop calling her ma’am,” Adrian said.

Maya looked at him.

He nodded gently.

“You don’t owe her respect she refuses to give you.”

For the first time, Maya’s posture changed.

Barely.

But enough.

Her shoulders straightened.

Vanessa saw it too.

“You have no idea who she really is,” Vanessa snapped.

Adrian looked toward Daniel.

“Take Maya somewhere private.”

“No.”

Maya’s answer surprised everyone.

She swallowed, clearly terrified, but continued.

“If I leave now, she’ll say I invented everything.”

Adrian studied her.

“What exactly do you know?”

Maya looked around the room.

“I don’t think this is the place.”

“Apparently,” Adrian said, glancing at Vanessa, “tonight has become the place for truth.”

Daniel approached.

“Adrian, security has sealed the exits. No one is being detained, but nobody gets access to the private offices until we secure the records.”

“Good.”

Vanessa stared at him.

“You sealed the exits?”

“For evidence preservation.”

“You’re treating me like a criminal.”

Daniel answered instead.

“If the financial report is accurate, Ms. Sterling, that distinction may become relevant.”

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“You smug little lawyer.”

Daniel smiled without warmth.

“I bill by the hour. Insults are complimentary.”

Several guests laughed nervously.

Vanessa turned toward Adrian.

“Tell him to stop this.”

Adrian ignored her.

“Maya, what else?”

Maya hesitated.

Her eyes moved toward a tall man standing near the rear of the ballroom.

He wore a dark gray suit and had spent most of the evening pretending not to watch her.

The moment Maya looked at him, he turned toward the exit.

Adrian noticed.

“Who is that?”

Maya whispered, “Vanessa’s brother.”

Adrian’s head snapped around.

“Ethan Sterling?”

Maya nodded.

“Stop him.”

Two security guards moved immediately.

Ethan Sterling reached the ballroom doors before they did.

He pulled one handle.

Locked.

He swore, turned, and found himself facing two security officers.

“Sir,” one said, “Mr. Cole would like you to remain.”

“I’m leaving.”

“Not through the private corridor.”

“This is kidnapping.”

“No, sir. The public exit is available. We’re only preventing access to restricted sections of the property.”

Ethan looked toward Vanessa.

For one brief second, brother and sister stared at each other.

Adrian saw something pass between them.

Fear.

Not embarrassment.

Not outrage.

Fear.

“Daniel,” Adrian said quietly, “call Detective Morales.”

Vanessa spun toward him.

“The police?”

“The foundation’s funds were stolen.”

“You said investigators traced them.”

“Exactly.”

Her breathing quickened.

“You don’t understand.”

“Then explain.”

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“Not here.”

Adrian almost laughed.

“A minute ago you accused Maya of stealing half a million dollars in front of this entire room.”

“That was different.”

“Because you thought the accusation would destroy her instead of you?”

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Adrian turned back to Maya.

“Tell me what you know.”

Maya stared at the marble floor.

Three weeks earlier, she explained, she had been cleaning Adrian’s private library after midnight.

Vanessa often held charity committee meetings there.

That night, Maya had found several pages sticking out from beneath a desk.

She hadn’t intended to read them.

But she saw the name of the foundation.

Then she saw payment amounts.

Twenty-five thousand.

Seventy thousand.

One hundred eighty thousand.

All labeled as emergency accommodation payments.

But the recipient names seemed strange.

One was a luxury travel company.

Another was a jewelry broker.

A third appeared to be a property management business in France.

“I thought I misunderstood,” Maya said.

“So I put the papers back.”

Vanessa’s face had gone motionless.

Adrian noticed.

“What happened next?”

“The next morning, Ms. Sterling asked if I’d cleaned the library.”

“And?”

“I said yes.”

Maya rubbed her hands together.

“She asked if I’d touched anything.”

Vanessa interrupted.

“Because you steal.”

Adrian’s eyes flashed.

“One more interruption and security escorts you out.”

Vanessa fell silent.

Maya continued.

“I told her I moved some papers while dusting.”

“What did she do?”

“She smiled.”

Maya’s eyes filled with tears.

“It scared me.”

Adrian frowned.

“Why?”

“Because she was furious underneath it.”

Maya explained that over the following week, her work schedule changed.

Her supervisor suddenly accused her of being late on days she had arrived early.

Two antique serving spoons disappeared and were mysteriously found inside Maya’s locker.

Then Vanessa personally intervened and persuaded the household manager not to fire her.

“She wanted me grateful,” Maya said.

“Or frightened.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Classic leverage.”

Vanessa scoffed.

“This is ridiculous.”

Maya looked at her.

“Then came the offer.”

Adrian’s attention sharpened.

“What offer?”

“She offered me fifty thousand dollars.”

The ballroom went quiet again.

Vanessa took a sharp breath.

Maya continued.

“She said her friend needed a live-in housekeeper in California. Fifty thousand cash if I left New York immediately and signed a confidentiality agreement.”

Daniel looked at Adrian.

“Did she show you the agreement?”

“I have a photograph.”

Vanessa lunged toward Maya.

“You little—”

Adrian caught Vanessa’s arm before she reached her.

Security moved instantly.

“Do not touch her again,” Adrian said.

His voice was low enough to frighten everyone nearby.

Vanessa jerked free.

“You’re ruining everything because of some servant.”

“No,” Maya said.

Everyone looked at her.

She had stopped trembling.

“You ruined everything because you thought servants don’t notice.”

Silence.

Maya reached beneath her apron.

She removed her phone.

“There’s another reason I didn’t take your money.”

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

Maya unlocked the screen.

“I recorded you.”

Vanessa went white.

Maya pressed play.

Her own frightened voice emerged through the ballroom speakers after Daniel connected the phone to the sound system.

“I don’t want trouble, Ms. Sterling.”

Then Vanessa’s unmistakable voice:

“Then stop creating it.”

“I only saw the payments.”

“You saw nothing.”

“But the foundation—”

“The foundation has more money than it knows what to do with.”

“That money helps families.”

A pause.

Then Vanessa laughed.

“Families I’ll never meet.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

Something inside him broke.

The recording continued.

“You’re going to California, Maya. You’ll take the fifty thousand, sign the agreement, and disappear.”

“I can’t.”

“You can.”

“And if I don’t?”

Another pause.

Vanessa’s voice became soft.

“I know your mother is behind on her mortgage.”

Maya stopped the recording.

The room erupted.

Adrian turned slowly toward Vanessa.

“You threatened her mother?”

Vanessa said nothing.

Maya’s voice cracked.

“She knew where my mother lived.”

Adrian looked at Daniel.

“Police. Now.”

“They’re already coming.”

From across the ballroom, Ethan Sterling suddenly shouted.

“Vanessa, don’t say another word!”

Everyone turned.

Ethan struggled against the security guards.

Vanessa looked toward her brother.

Adrian followed her gaze.

Then Maya said something else.

“The five hundred thousand isn’t the whole secret.”

Adrian looked back at her.

Maya’s face was pale.

“What do you mean?”

“That was only the money they managed to move.”

“How much were they planning to take?”

Maya hesitated.

May you like

“Eight million dollars.”

Even Daniel Price stopped breathing.
